The Carrie Speer Reading Corner

Our school community has started a fund dedicated to the “Carrie Speer Reading Corner”.

We will start this by planting a tree and placing benches in an open area between the library and the auditorium.  Depending on the funds generated, we plan to add a pergola, more trees, more benches, some art work – the vision for the design is a dynamic work.
We are making arrangements to plant the first tree in the next week or so.

What we are asking of you:
All Clubs & Organizations – a donation to the fund.  (We are hoping for something in the range of $50 per organization).
Sporting teams, classes, and individual donations to this endeavor are welcome.

This is a vision of many – we will raise the funds necessary to provide a nice area in Mrs. Carrie Speer’s memory.
Please see Claire Thomas or Coach Stewart for more information!  Email Mrs. Lynn Siebenkittle if your organization is transferring funds.

SHS Student Honored

Bridging Communications

Slidell High Sophomore Kayla Cureaux has been honored by Bridging Communications, the opportunity  to travel to Belize City, June 1st-8th, 2014, to visit Stella Maris- a deaf school, to inspire Belizean students, to pursue their education, and to provide their parents with an American Sign Language class. Kayla is overwhelmed with excitement and expectation. She wants to supply ASL books, supplies, and recreational equipment to the school on her visit.

This is where you can help! Please sow a monetary seed to help finance Bridging Communications and Kayla's efforts to be a blessing on this mission trip.  Please make checks out to Bridging Communications.

Thank you for your support

SHS Teacher of the Year

Mrs. Sherry Bass

Teacher of the Year

Mrs. Bass is a proud Slidell High graduate.  This school year marks her 28th year at SHS, even though she has been teaching longer.  In her response to the questions posed in the selection packet, Sherry said, “I strive to look for new ways to motivate my students to challenge themselves and go beyond any self-imposed restrictions.”  This philosophy she also applies to herself; always ready to learn new methodology, to incorporate new technology into her teaching, to mentor new teachers in a calm and patient manner, and to serve as a presenter to groups of colleagues, Sherry is always seeking ways to inspire the minds of her students.  She says, “I  look for students who are making weak progress, no progress, or strong progress.  I am not looking only at the weak students because the stronger students need to be enriched and challenged as well.”  Mrs. Bass uses every moment of instructional time, every day.  Congratulations to Mrs. Sherry Bass, Slidell High School’s Teacher of the year for 2014-2015.  wcp

"I am humbly accepting this for all my Slidell High Family who work so hard to “get it done” each and every year!
BTW I started teaching in 1979 at Salmen High, and had 4 years at Hammond High, before joining this team in 1984. Mr. Percy, that would be (of course we must subtract the 2 years of retirement when I thought I might like gardening and cleaning house), (DRUM ROLL for a math word problem) 28 years at Slidell High!  Again, thank all of  you for making this THE place to teach!"

Slidell High business and engineering interns

SHS Business & Engineering Interns

Slidell High business and engineering interns Morgan Age and Stephen Dieck  played a major role in Slidell’s new master plan for the bike path extension.  Under the supervision of Eric Lundin, City Planner  at the Slidell Department of Planning, the students created the path types and routes that will connect areas of Slidell together.  They researched, devised, and presented the master plan for Slidell’s bike path extension to the planning and zoning department who will now implement the plan as funding becomes available.  The purpose of the plan is to create a network of bike and pedestrian paths for Slidell residents and visitors.  It will also provide safe transportation routes for children to schools, local parks, and recreational  usage.

Powerlifting

Powerlifting

Slidell High Senior, Ester Saavedra, won first place in the state powerlifting championship for the 123 pound weight class.  She squatted a total of 270 pounds, bench pressed  120 pounds, and dead lifted 300 pounds for an overall  total weight of 690 pounds!
“I am so thankful for this year of hard work, dedication, and adversity.  If it weren’t for God and all the prayers, I would have never been able to win the title of state champion.  The fact that I was able to finish strong my senior year is the most amazing accomplishment I could have ever hoped for,” Ester said.

15 March 2014: Congratulations to Ester for winning a gold medal at the State powerlifing meet this past weekend in West Monroe.
