Students receive instruction in traditional grammar, paragraph development, vocabulary, study skills, research, creative writing, and critical reading of drama, shorts stories, essays, poetry, and novels. Students are expected to apply the fundamentals of mechanics and usage to composition assignments.
English I – Honors (1160 A – 1170 B)

Recommendation course.
During the first semester, this course encompasses traditional grammar, paragraph development, and the literary genres: mythology, early Greek, Shakespearean and modern dramas, short story, and poetry. An extensive library unit is presented with emphasis on the variety of reference sources available. During the second semester, students are expected to apply the fundamentals of mechanics and usage to composition assignments, which include themes and a minimum of one mini-critical paper about the literary works being studied – drama, nonfiction, and novels. Vocabulary study, creative writing, and additional readings are expected as an adjunct to most literary units.
English I - Gifted (7550 A – 7560 B)

This course functions within the framework of study seminar. Seminar topics will encompass humanistic themes and include selections from different genres in literature, emphasizing novel, drama, poetry, short story, and essay. Regular classroom curriculum will be compacted, allowing for critical examination of literature and for extensive reading, research, writing and discussion.
English II (1190 A – 1200 B)

1 Year
Students receive instruction in grammar, composition, library skills, vocabulary, study skills, research, creative writing, and literature. Students are expected to apply the fundamentals of mechanics and usage to composition assignments, which focus primarily on expository and persuasive essays. The first semester includes short stories, essays, biographies, and poetry. The second semester includes drama, novels, and the writing of a research paper.
English II – Honors (1250 A – 1260 B)

Recommendation course.
This course includes a study of grammar, composition, vocabulary, library skills, and literature. Students are expected to master fundamentals of traditional grammar and to incorporate them in the wide variety of composition assignments throughout the year. Summer reading is a requirement.
English II - Gifted (7570 A– 7580 B)
Grade 10
1 year
This course provides a varied overview of world literature so that students may develop as awareness of various cultures. Students will read selections of world literature in the genres of poetry, non-fiction, and drama. The student will write in order to master the following forms: exposition, description, narration, argumentation, and literary criticism. Communication skills in the areas of oral interpretation and group discussion will be developed.
English III (1280 A – 1290 B)

Students receive instruction in chronological review of American literature, research paper, speaking, listening, note taking, outlining, analyzing oral and written material, study skills and library usage for research, explaining distinctions of humanities and literary forms. Summer reading is a requirement.
English III – Honors (1340 A – 1350 B)

Recommendation course.
This course contains the same content as average English; however, more reading and writing will be required than in English III average. Summer reading is a requirement.
English III – Advanced Placement (1370 A – 1380 B)

This course will engage students in becoming skilled readers of prose written in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts and in becoming skilled writers who compose for a variety of purposes, enabling students to read complex texts with understanding and to write prose of sufficient richness and complexity to communicate effectively with mature readers. The intensive concentration on language use will enhance ability to use grammatical conventions both appropriately and with sophistication and to develop stylistic maturity. The depth and breadth of reading and writing is beyond that of high school honors courses. Upon successful completion and standardized test, the student may earn college credit. Summer reading is a requirement.
English IV (1400 A- 1410 B)

Students receive instruction in critical essay writing, chronological review of British literature, speaking, listening and evaluating of written material. The first semester will focus on British literature from Anglo-Saxon times through the seventeenth century. The second semester will focus on the eighteenth century through the twentieth century. A critical research paper may be required. Students are required to complete a year-long Senior Research project.
English IV – Honors (1460 A – 1470 B)

This is a recommendation course.
The content of this course is similar to English IV Average. However, more reading and writing will be required than in English IV Average. A critical research paper is required. Students are required to complete a year-long Senior Research project
English IV – Advanced Placement (1490 A – 1500 B)

Recommendation course.
In this course, students will consider works' structure, style and themes as well as such smaller scale elements as figurative language, imagery, symbolism, and tone. The course will include intensive study of representative works from various genres and periods, concentrating on works of recognized literary merit. Reading in depth and critically, the students will then turn attention to in-depth written analysis and original interpretation of the works intended for a mature, sophisticated audience. The depth and breadth of reading and writing is beyond that of high school honors courses. Upon successful completion and standardized test, the student may earn college credit.
Business English (1070 A –1080 B)

You must have 1 credit in a computer class to take Business English.
Beginning in the 2005-06 school year, no 4-year colleges in Louisiana will accept Business English in place of English IV . This course is designed to provide students with the communication tools they will need on the job. It provides the broad, thorough training necessary to help students develop competence in each of the communication skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students will also be introduced to the language of business. Students use Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, and Publisher. This course reviews concepts for IC3 certification.
Advanced Composition (1915 S)
Grade 12

Prerequisite: Successful completion of English III and a teacher recommendation.
Students will practice, in depth, the processes of pre-writing, writing, revision, and sharing. This course includes varied assignments ranging from formal research to creative forms. Goals of the class are written effectiveness, creative and critical thinking, growth and development of style and expression, and a background in writing techniques and devices. Modeling and collaborative learning are also components of the curriculum.
Teaching Academy Course (STAR) (5792 A - 5793 B)

1 year course required for Teaching Academy Students
This year-long course investigates the intellectual, physical, emotional and social stages of child and adolescent development. Included in this class are observations and interaction with learners through planned activities and lessons.
Teaching Academy Internship (7406 A - 7407 B) and (9547 A - 9548 B)
Grade 12
1 year elective
After successful completion of the prerequisite courses during the senior year, the student is assigned to a mentor teacher for two hours each week. Students are not paid for this on-the-job training in area schools. Two credits are awarded for this course.
