Why a career in food service?
The food service industry is not only one of the fastest growing occupational areas in the United States but is also one of the fastest growing employment opportunities in our community.
CAREERS: DIETICIAN, CHEF, RESTAURANT / HOTEL MANAGER OR OWNER, CATERER, BAKER, BANQUET MANAGER
Sophomore year the course will focus on basic nutrition and food preparation skills.
Junior and Senior years, students will participate in the Pro-Start program which has been developed by the National Restaurant Association. This two year course focuses on the fundamentals of professional food preparation, customer relations, management skills, accounting, sanitation, and careers in the restaurant and hospitality industry. Shadowing experiences, demonstrations, field trips, guest speakers, and catering events will be planned throughout the program.
The program includes a 400 hour paid internship to be completed after school hours and a final exam developed by the National Restaurant Association.
Students who successfully complete all requirements of the course will receive a nationally recognized certificate indicating academic and work place skill mastery.
Completion of the Culinary Arts Academy may enable students to earn college credit at Louisiana Universities and scholarships for those who major in an area of food service.

Adv. Nutrition & Food 1/2 credit
11th grade
Pro-Start I 1 credit
12th grade
Pro-Start II 1-2 credits Senior students may earn an extra credit for working at approved sites.
